Installation instructions

Please refer to the step-by-step photos here on this page for additional installation guidance.

  1. Ensure that you have completed Issue 82, which sees the installation of the ‘bumper anchors’ (parts 82B and 82C) behind the front nose (part 2A). The magnetic tow bar receiver will attract to the screws holding the bumper anchors in place.
  2. Hook the angled front section of the tow bar (the part displaying the embossed Mike Lane badge) in and under the inside of the front of the nose (part 2A). This part sits inside the nose to prevent the tow bar falling out.
  3. Angle the rear of the tow bar up so that the two magnetic standoffs attract and connect to the two exposed screws on the rear of the bumper anchors.
  4. To remove the tow bar, simply follow these steps in reverse.
  5. That’s it! You’re done.

Also known as the ‘Camera Tow Bar Receiver’, or simply as KITT’s ‘Tow Bar’, this highly detailed magnetic add-on is a critical detail missing from the standard model.

Constructed from high-quality materials, this tow bar mod for the Fanhome 1:8 KITT has been carefully designed and finished to match how it appeared in the TV series Knight Rider.

The tow bar receiver under the front nose of KITT is visible in almost every episode of Knight Rider Seasons 1 and 2. While still present, they then redesigned the tow bar in Season 3 to be much less visible.

Even though the tow bar is such an iconic feature of KITT, curiously, it’s a detail often missing from scale models of KITT. And unfortunately, the Fanhome 1:8 KITT model (as fantastic as it is) is no exception.

If you’re wondering why KITT had a tow bar in the first place, you may be surprised to learn that it did actually serve a purpose but not within the show itself as you might expect. Rather than being one of Bonnie’s ingenious creations, its actual purpose was to assist the film crew. It was used to connect KITT to a camera car used for towing KITT around during filming.

Two finishes – Clean and Dusty

Even when KITT was clean, the tow bar rarely was. For this reason, I’m offering the tow bar in two finishes.

The dusty finish receives a special detailing treatment to provide an authentic dusty look with some subtle mud splashes – exactly how the tow bar looked in most episodes of Knight Rider.

As you’ll see from the reference photos on this page, the dusty look is arguably more accurate to how KITT looked most of the time in the TV series.

However, if you’re after a more pristine, showroom finish, the clean finish is also a great option.

Can’t decide? Why not grab both! Being magnetic, the tow bars are instantly interchangeable and are great fun to switch up for a quick style change.
